Garden Maintenance
5 Signs Your Garden Needs Professional Care
Most gardens can be kept ticking over with a bit of regular attention. But there's a point where a garden shifts from "needs a weekend of effort" to "needs a proper plan." Catching that point early usually means less work (and cost) to bring it back.
1. Weeds are winning
The odd weed is normal. Weeds establishing faster than you can pull them, especially in lawn areas, usually means the grass itself has thinned out and lost its ability to out-compete them: a sign the lawn needs feeding, aerating, or both.
2. Hedges have lost their shape
Hedges that haven't been trimmed on a schedule tend to grow woody and bare in the centre, which no amount of surface trimming can fix quickly. The longer this goes on, the harder (and slower) it is to bring the shape back without leaving obvious bald patches for a season.
3. Water is pooling, or not reaching parts of the garden at all
Both are signs of a drainage or irrigation issue rather than something more watering will fix. Left alone, pooling water can rot root systems, and dry patches tend to spread as the stressed grass or plants around them die back too.
4. You can't remember the last seasonal clean-up
Leaf litter, dead growth, and general debris build up fast in Gauteng's growth seasons. Left too long, it smothers the lawn underneath and gives pests a place to settle in for winter.
5. It's started to feel like a chore instead of a space you enjoy
This one's less technical but just as real. If your garden has become something you avoid rather than a space you use, that's often the clearest sign it's time to hand the maintenance side over and get the enjoyment back.
